Saturday Steal... Sexy Curves Mascara

Out of my favorite Becca Ultimate mascara, I needed a quick fix and didn't have time to wait for an order to arrive.  I ran over to the local cvs and found Sexy Curves Mascara.  After hearing several clients and a few of my Makeup Artist friends rave about it I thought I would give it a try.

The brush is thin and has a wave shape to it so it really gets all of my lashes.  I like how it can get the small lashes on the inner corner of my eyes and my near nonexistent bottom lashes.  The formula goes on smooth and didn't clump at all.  It isn't quite volumizing... but it does make my lashes look crazy long and gives them a slight curve.  So far after 3 days I haven't had any irritating flaking or smudges.  But the best is no weird smells and I have received a ton of "Are you wearing fake lashes?" So it's a hit in my book.  For the bargain price of $7, it's a steal and must have.

A Trip to Spa L'Auberge | Del Mar, CA

Husband and I took a trip down south recently to visit my brother who was returning from Afghanistan.  We chose to stay at L'Auberge after a friend recommended it.  We had some spare time one day as my brother caught up on sleep and tried to adjust to the time zone, so we headed over to the spa.  Since it was so last minute they didn't have much availability so we settled on their April Sun-Kissed Special.  A 90 minute treatment that included an organic vanilla orange raw sugar scrub, full hour massage and Morracan oil scalp massage.

We arrived right on time since they didn't have water rituals only a steam sauna.  The front desk was cute, they had a little boutique filled with various products and gifts and the staff was really nice.  They showed us where to go to change and we were on our way to bliss.  The locker room was really nice.  It had a beachy, cottage theme.  All teals, blues and greens.  It was small but not uncomfortable if another person was there also.  I quickly changed and headed out to the relaxation room.  They had an indoor room and outdoor patio.  We sat on the patio for a few minutes until our therapists arrived.  Husband loved his but is not great about explaining so I will share with you my take on it.

My therapist's name was Switzerland or Swit.  She showed me to my room and gave me the usual instructions before stepping out. What I liked was that she explained and let me feel each product she was going to use.

She stepped out and I jumped on the table.  A really nice table, the room was a comfortable tempurature but the bed was heated a big plus when you are getting a body wrap.

Swit returned and began the treatment.  She started with the scrub and was suprisingly firm with it.  Most times the therapist seem scared of scrubs and don't really seem to work them in.  So not the case here.  After she brought me to the showers and I rinsed off, while she cleaned the room.  She returned for me with water and brought me back to our original room to begin the massage.  The massage was fantastic!  Perfect pressure and not just a basic cookie cutter massage.  She really customized it to my intake form.  Hit all the tension spots I asked for and even did some light stretching.  As of today it is in my top 3 of best massages of all time!

I didn't get a scalp massage... I think she forgot but the massage was so great I didn't care.
My skin felt amazing after and super soft.
I headed over to the sauna to complete my visit before checking out.

Overall... 4.5 stars
I will return for a massage if I can get in with Swit and would even do the scrub again.  The entire place was relaxing and freindly.
Cons... No water rituals... super dissapointed.  And I wanted to buy the body balm they used to complete the treatment but it wasn't for sale. =(

Thank you to Spa L'auberge website for the top photos.  The others were from my fabulous iphone.
I pay personally and fully for all of my spa treatments and experiences and my reviews are never based on "trades" or "complimentary" anything.

Thursday Reviews | Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream | April 28, 2011

So I recently did some traveling to the snow and realized I had once again forgot a moisturizer!  And super cold weather and no moisturizer is not a good combo.  So I rummaged through my makeup bag and came up with a little sample of Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream.  It had plenty in it to last the 5 days I would be away, so I decided to give it a try.  I have never tried any Dermalogica before so I was hesitant. My experience with the company was only with the over pushy reps that wanted me to invest 5-7K in a brand I wasn't to sure about.  So I usually ignored the brand as a whole.  I received some samples at an event I attended a few months back and chucked them in my makeup bag to giveaway.  So glad I kept this one.   I like the ingredients of Vitamins C & E, Silk proteins and aloe.  All good things for my skin.  The feel was nice and light.  This is definitely not a heavy moisturizer (which I prefer) but it worked for me.  I didn't breakout and my skin didn't become dry in the rough, cold mountain air.  I layered it with Sonya Dakar's Omega Oil in Clear, and Jan Marini's C-esta Serum along with Rhonda Allisons SPF Daytime Defense.  Alone it wasn't enough moisture for my skin and really didn't help with makeup application.  But layered it was a dream.
Overall:  4 stars could have been 5 but the smell was weird and I like a product that can stand alone.
Thank you to Dermalogica for the picture!

Reflextions at Harrah's Lake Tahoe

Reflextions at Harrah's Lake Tahoe

After a fantastic and long day skiing, I convinced the husband to take me to the spa!
We chose the spa at the hotel we had were staying in Reflection's at Harrah's Lake Tahoe. I could actually smell the lavender from the elevators every time I went up to my room.  So I had high hopes. The front desk staff greeted us and we asked about availability and services.  She handed us a menu and basically stared at us waiting for us to choose.  I wanted a sports therapy but husband wanted a couples massage.  When I asked if we could do both she looked at me like I was crazy and said in a slow, loud voice, "Sports Therapy is stretching and doesn't fit in the couples room."  okay... bad day maybe?  She then proceeded to tell me I didn't want sports therapy and described it like I didn't already know what it is or maybe couldn't read the description in the brochure she handed us.

Husband and I looked at each other and started laughing.  We took the couples massage... and I only stayed because they had pre-treatment rituals... sauna, steam, hot tub, I'm a sucker for those.

We arrived early to take advantage of the water rituals... I started with the sauna.  The attendant was fantastic, she brought me iced water and showed me how to work anything incase there was an emergency. I didn't like that she kept calling me sweetie, even more since I felt old enough to be her mother... but my name is hard to pronounce and she struggled with it so I didn't correct her.  Next I hit up the hot tub and then another round of sauna.  By then I was sleepy and showered off for a nap in the relax room.  The spa was pretty busy so the fruit and snacks were gone... and I was starving.  So I drank about 5 glasses of water.  Not smart, you will see why in a minute.

After a nice nap the attendant arrived with my massage therapist and took me back to the treatment room where my husband was already waiting.  We don't really do a lot of "couples" things like this so I was nervous to see how it would go.  And it was bad.  The therapist didn't do a consult with me but husband said his did with him.  The room was cold... not good combined with 5 cups of water and an empty stomach.  20 minutes in husband was snoring softly and I needed a bathroom.  When it was finally time to flip I excused myself and got up, something I have never done before and hope to never have to do again.  Talk about ruining the vibe.  The massage wasn't great for me anyway... to light.  I returned shortly... husband was still snoring and we finished out the massage.  The therapist had a great feel to him but the massage was just too soft for me.  I was really looking for something deeper.
Husband stayed for more steam and I showered off and went upstairs to my room and figure out dinner.
Overall... 4 stars for husband, we both agreed the locker room and attendants were 5 star... front desk, not so great, not even really good ZERO... massage 3.5... probably wouldn't try this spa again

Travel Emergency

Travel Emergency!!!

So I went back to Mississippi for the holidays and in a travel skin emergency I realized I forgot my favorite dry weather cleanser.  So a quick trip to Wal-Mart and 20 minutes of me reading every label in the beauty aisle left me with the Olay Total Effects Cream Cleanser with Blemish Control.  I bought the 3 piece kit, which included the cleanser, a day lotion with SPF and a night cream.  I only needed the cleanser but since I purchased all of them I thought I would give them all a try.  I would be in MISS for 10 days plenty of time to form a solid opinion, skincare wise anyway.  Here are my thoughts...
The day cream went on smooth and stayed on well.  No rolling or peeling after I applied my makeup or a higher SPF.  (15 just isn't enough) But after a few days I began to notice small whiteheads and stopped using this item.

The Night Cream was a total disappointment.  It rolled off no matter how little I seemed to use.  It didn't give me that night cream moisturized feeling either.  So this was a two night trial only before I went back to my other night cream.

The Cream Cleanser was a fantastic surprise!  I loved the consistency and the little grains in the scrub.  It had Salicylic Acid and really helped keep the majority of my breakouts away.  I used it morning and night, over the sink and in the shower and really don't have a single complaint!  And for the price of 6.99 you really can't go wrong.

Brrr... It's Cold Out... Wait Now it's Warm

Loving Sonya Dakar's Omega oil right now with this dry, cold weather one day and hot, humid weather the next!  I'm using the ACNE formula, but have used the maintenance in the past with great results. It keeps my skin perfectly hydrated all day long. Apply 1 pump to face and neck and work it in rather than dabbing and I follow up with a nice thick moisturizer like Jan Marini TGF Cream or  the Sonya Dakar Hydrasoft Cream.  It works well with other serums and I even use it at night with my Retinol Treatment.  Check it out...  Omega 3 Serum

Turn Back a Bad Week

Turn Back a Bad Week

Ok so we all know I have been using Jan Marini Product personally and in my Skincare Studio for about 3 years now.  What can I say besides I am hooked and totally in love with the products and their creator.  Jan is so amazing in person... she knows her stuff and is super nice and it turns out we used to live in the same town!  That being said, so not happy about the crazy price increase!  $20 increase for my beloved C-Esta Serum! Yikes.   It looks like I'm not eating out two extra days a month to cover that.
But what this blog entry is really about is my all new favorite treatment... yes the new Age Intervention Regeneration Mask.  After 10 days of crazy travel, a horrible cold, 7 nasty airplanes and 7 even grosser airports, my skin was NOT happy!  What to do? What to do?  I dig through my array of products and come out with this plain looking and not so great smelling mask.  It has Resveratrol, Glycolic Acid and Co-Enzyme Q-10, three of my favorite ingredients right now.  So I knew I would get some help. I did a light, (you could see through it) layer and left on for 20 minutes.  My skin is used to very strong peels so if you are new to glycolic acid start with 10 minutes.  It feels a bit tingly at first and the smell is just not great but the results are huge.  I followed it with Colorescience Be Still Mist, C-Esta Serum, Sonya Dakar Omega 3 oil for acne and Jan Marini TGF Cream.  20 minutes later my skin was softer, smoother and just better rested, like I had just had a great facial and massage.  What shocked me was that the results lasted 3 days; yeah I counted and even asked people how my skin looked!  I even received a compliment at the grocery store (without solicitation) on day 3!   Unfortunately I don't carry this product in my studio or on my online store right now but you can go directly to their website for more info or to order it.  Check it out all my glow lovers you will not be disappointed.

A Trip to Sano Spa...Monterey, CA

Apr 4, 2011 | A Trip back to Sano Spa

So I decided to have a day of relaxation.  After calling around I found a spot that would take me last minute... and I mean 30 minutes notice.
I rushed down to Sano in Monterey on Casa Munras.  I know this spa from previous visits and working there a bit wayyyy back when it first opened.  But it has really changed in that two year.  Totally different staff, product lines, treatments and vibe.
I was greeted by the front desk staff when I arrived and shown to the locker room.  It is a small spa and the locker room is tiny, but not uncomfortable.  I took a quick shower and changed into a robe.  They don't have a steam room or sauna so no pre-treatment rituals.  I found a quiet corner and cuddled up to play a little words with friends and listen to my ipod. The place smelled amazing... like lavender and eucalyptus and the music was pleasant and at a nice level.  An attendant came over and offered me a beverage and a cut-sliced apple.  There were several other people there, a few girlfriend events and a few couples.  So the place seemed a little crowded and noisy.  The waiting area is built like a long hallway and voices travel... which can be entertaining when listening to the employees or a pair of friends gossip or annoying when you are trying to zone out.
My first treatment was a detoxifying mud wrap $100/50 min.  The mud was warm but smelled HORRIBLE... seriously I had to breathe out of my mouth it was awful.  The room was freezing and I was looking forward to the wrapping up bit.  After she applied the mud to my whole body I was wrapped in a space blanket and hot packs were placed on my stomach and chest.  Next I was treated to a foot rub... not really a massage.  Overall the best part of this particular treatment.  After about 7-10 minutes I was instructed to put my robe on... over the mud(?) and directed back out and down the hall to the locker room for a shower.  That stuff was tough to get off but the body wash in the shower smelled amazing... like lemongrass.  After the shower I went back to my room and had a honey milk lotion applied and told to wait for my next treatment.
Pro... nice decor, music and body wash and I didn't have to get up for the massage just wait for the next therapist to arrive
Not so pro... the smell was awful, the room was freezing, the treatment started 10 minutes late and ended 10 minutes early so not even close to a 50 minute treatment,.
Overall... don't waste money on this treatment.

Next up was an aromatherapy massage $110/ 50 min.  The therapist arrived and introduced himself and asked about areas I would like worked in particular.  Then asked if the room temp. was alright.  After I told him I was cold he turned up the heat and grabbed me a thick comforter and started the treatment.  I loved it!  The blanket helped warm me up and he concentrated on my right shoulder and arm just like I asked.  It was full body from head to toes.  He didn't use too much oil or scent so I felt great after the treatment.  I probably would have fallen asleep or at least into a deep fog but two staff members were having a large, loud conversation right outside my door...
Pro... asked about my preferences, nice oil, great technique, warm blanket
Not so Pro...  chatty cathys outside the treatment room= no zen for me.
Overall... I would go back for the same treatment and therapist.

After that I had a signature facial. Again I didn't have to leave the bed.  The massage therapist did ask if I wanted to get up and stretch when I said no, he brought some water and left.  The esthetician arrived seconds later and pipped up the lights(?) not sure why and started the treatment.  She didn't ask about my skin or if I had any facial goals or talk at all.  So I have no clue what products she used.  But I did take a peek when I got up and saw that it was glo therapeutics.  It was a traditional, basic facial.  Nothing fancy.  I did love the exfoliation mask w/ steam and the neck & shoulder massage was a perfect way to fully banish my shoulder pain.
Pro... great shoulder massage, products were not over scented.
Not so pro... no consult or recommendations???  Missed out on a sale there.
Overall... relaxing.

I finished the afternoon with a nice soak in the tub.  I bought a package so this came with... but I think it should be included with every 50 min treatment. The tub was nice but again the room was HUGE and freezing.  But they did have a robe warmer so getting out was great.  The tub wasn't filled much and only went up to my belly button so I could only really soak by sitting on the bottom (not the seat but the floor) and scrunching down.  That brought it up to about my underarms.  I sat for awhile and enjoyed it.  The only totally quiet spot in the place.  Next to the massage it was the best part of the day.
Pro... quiet, relaxing, robe warmer
Not so pro... room was cold and tub was awkward to get in and out of and can I get a little more water???

The afternoon was overall a success and I will return (minus the wrap) sometime in the future.

Creating a Skin Care Routine

Creating a Skin Care Routine
Do you keep to the same routine every morning & night? Do you know what a good skincare routine consists of? Have you ever wondered if you were applying your skin care products in the right order? Always remember to apply thinnest to thickest when applying products.  Here is a little cheat sheet.

1) Cleansing always come first. I prefer cream or sorbet cleansers they are much gentler on the skin and don't strip it of its own protective barrier.  For oily skin a foaming cleanser works great to help eliminate the impurities and excess oil.

2) Mist second.  Not much to say here I like the True mineral Mist or Sonya Dakar aromasol mist.  I spray directly on the skin (avoiding the eyes) then pat in.  Don't waste cotton.  If you notice makeup still coming of when you mist onto cotton then you didn't clean your skin all the way in step 1!  Try a Clarisonic brush to achieve a deeper clean.

3) The next step for either day or night would be a serum.  I love a great vitamin C serum.  Nothing promotes healtier skin then Vitamin C it penetrates deeper into the skin and allows vital nutrients to nourish the skin. I have tried several from Jan Marini Cesta, Tu'el Crystal C and Le mieux C booster, never had a problem with any of them.   Vitamin C serum is wonderful because it is one of the best antioxidants to fight free radical damage, it helps tone, lift and plump fine lines & wrinkles. Serums should be used before your day or night cream.

4) Resurfacer.  Gone are the days of manual scrubs of seeds or crystals.  Today is all about resurfacing the skin to acheive that airbrushed look.  I love the sonya dakar Complexion Corrector or Jan Marini Bioclear.  Oil of Olay Regernist makes a good one too.  When buying a resurfacer look for ingrediants like retinoil or glycolic acid.

5) Moisurize!  I like to pick one cream that I can use day or night.  Don't forget your neck & chest!

6) SPF!!!!!  I apply a 30 spf every morning after my moisturzer from my forehead down to just about my breasts.  Don't forget the ears and back of neck.

6)*  Makeup primer... this is optional but I like to use one to give my makeup a little extra staying power.

5 Steps to Keeping Skin Care Simple

Keys To Keeping Skin Care Simple

I get asked everyday, " How can I make my skin care system easier?" so here are my 5 tips:
1.  Find a great cleanser and buy two of them.  A great cleanser makes all the difference.  It is the primary step and will effect everything else you apply to your skin.  The wrong cleanser can over-strip and dry out your skin (that tight, squeaky feeling)  or not fully remove all of the impurities, leaving your skin feeling unclean.  I say get two because you want to leave one in your shower and one by your sink.  Leave the skin one for your night time deep cleanse.  During  this step you will be removing all of the days dirt and makeup so really work the cleanser into your skin for a good 2 minutes to ensure a full clean.  The second bottle you will leave in the shower for your quick morning cleanse.  You don't have to work as hard for this cleanse because your skin should be relatively clean from the night before.  You are cleansing more as a prepping step before all of your other morning products.

2.  Apply the right amount... Most people use too much of a product.  This will then take longer to settle in and some times begin to roll off the skin.  A good rule of thumb is a nickel size amount for cleansers. A pea size amount for serums and a dime size amount for creams.  Work the products in your finger tips, warming them up and then apply fully to the face for an even application.  Don't dab (except eye cream)!  Allow every step to fully absorb in between layers.  Apply your first serum and then brush your teeth or hair to allow it to fully absorb.  Then move on to the next.  This saves you time and money, by not wasting product!

3.  A good SPF can double as a makeup primer.  If you apply your foundation directly after your SPF step it will settle on the skin in a nice even layer.  This gives you one less step to do and wait to dry... that makeup primer!  A lot of SPFs on the market today come in hydrating and mattifying, pick the right one for your skin.

4.  Keep your scrub in the shower!  I work my scrub while I am waiting for my conditioner to set in.  It saves time and water.  And it is way easier to clean up after in the shower than the vanity.

5.  Know your system!  The most common comment I receive from clients is that they just don't remember what order their products go, causing them frustration and time.  So simple solution write numbers on the bottle for the order in which they are applied.  1,2,3,4,5... or write the products in order on a post-it and stick it to your mirror until you have it memorized.  This will save you time and wasted products.

Brush Back A Few Years

Brush Back a Few Years

So I discovered the Clarisonic Skin Brush a few years back and instantly fell in love.  When I contacted the company about possibly carrying it in my own studio I was excited to discover they have a  four speed "Pro" version that they sell exclusively to and thru Salons and Spas (not make-up stores they carry the lower 3 speed plus version).  So I ordered a tester unit and have been in love ever since.  Why?  It just does everything I need it to without me having to do much.  It times my facial cleanse perfectly.  Think of it as a cleansing brush/exfoliate/massage all in a minute.  Leaving the skin more refreshed, clean, softer and firmer looking.  And with those results... who wouldn't be willing to spend a minute with this beauty a day?  I have noticed that my serums absorb better and quicker when I use the brush and I get way less breakouts... especially those pesky whiteheads.

Clarisonic included a Body Brush Attachment recently with the PRO kit and I have to say I'm a little on the fence.  I like it for elbows, knees but other than that I just don't have the patience to buff my whole body 30 seconds at a time.  I prefer some loofah gloved and a yummy body wash.
Thanks to Clarisonic for the picture.

How to Fake the Bake...

Tip: How to Fake a Bake

When summer approaches, many people turn to indoor tanning to keep their skin golden. With all the studies out today on the damage of tanning beds, I recommend a safe alternative, a fake bake.

How to Get the Best Self Tan

  • Buff - Loofah gloves are the best and super cheap. ($1 a pair at most stores) Lather up with a nice cleansing gel and buff away dead, dry skin.  I like a cleanser with a little AHA's in them like Sonya Dakar's Daily wash in CARA CARA or Jan Marini BioGlycolic Body Wash with Glycolic Acid.
  • Prime the skin with a light moisturizer, paying extra attention to the knees, elbows, back of arms, and achilles.  Allow it to set in for about 10 minutes before moving on to step 3.
  • Tint... now you're ready to start adding the color.  Use GLOVES! Apply in circular motions to keep coverage even.  To reach your back put lotion on a 3 foot strip of plastic wrap and sweep back and forth like a towel.
  • Start with a light tint and work up to a darker look. Layers are key!
  • Don't forget to keep your skin moisturized to keep the look fresh longer and re-apply weekly.
  • And don't leave off the SPF just because the sun is not out or because you are "tanner". The more damaging UVAI rays may not be responsible for burns but are the cause of wrinkles, premature skin aging, DNA damage and skin cancer! Yikes!

More on Sunscreens...

Read your SPF labels to make sure that they cover UVA and UVB rays. UVB is the cause of 95% of all skin cancer according to a study done by Frederick Urback, MD of Temple University.
A great sunscreen is Colorescience brush on minerals. It comes in two tints or clear and has an SPF of 30  or 50  and is very water resistant. Another great one is Jan Marini's Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant—with PhytoMelanin™, SPF 30, and very water resistant. It protects and is anti-aging! Who doesn't want that? And my fallback is always Neutrogena SPF 30 in the dry touch formula.

So HAUTE Skin lovers... What is your favorite Fake Bake move?

Bathroom Detox

Here are a few of my rules to live by in the bathroom...

Loofah/ Washcloth:  It doesn't matter if it is natural sponge or one of those plastic mesh sponges or just a plain old washcloth, you should to be washing it at least once a week in the dishwasher or washing machine. Loofahs and mesh sponges both carry bacteria, which can easily infect you via an open cut or even acne!  Natural loofahs should be thrown out every few weeks; mesh sponges are more resistant to bacteria and can last up to eight weeks.

Disposable Razor:  Toss after 3-4 uses, razors get clogged with bacteria loving dead skin cells which can cause skin irritations and infections.

Towels:  You slough off dead skin cells and bath towels harbor those cells and their bacteria.   Towels should be changed and washed every 3 days and when not in use should be hung and unfolded to air dry.  And when it comes to towels, lets not share.

Shower Head:  Bacteria can grow in and on the shower head a quick easy fix is a filtered shower head that you replace every few months or a metal or stainless steel head that is less likely to grow bacteria.

What is shelf life?
The amount of time an open and used product is considered good.   Stick to these simple rules and you should be safe!
3 Months for mascara~~~ Mascara can grow bacteria and can cause Pink Eye and styes!
1 year for liquids (i.e. lotions, body butters, cleansers, foundation ) 6 months if it is a container that you have to put your fingers in to access.
3 yrs for powders (i.e. eyeshadows, blush, mineral found.)
Lipstick: 2-3 years unless you have had a cold sore breakout.  Dip your lipsticks in a cup of rubbing alcohol for a quick detox.
And remember when in doubt throw it out!
